SCOTT'S HOTEL - MALLORCA, SPAIN
The island of Mallorca in the Balearic Islands, off the coast of Spain, in the Mediterranean sea, is the number one tourist destination in Europe.
It is said that the new airport, in Palma, is capable of handling 12,000 visitors an hour.
You won't find crowds like that at Scott's Hotel, located in the quiet town of Binissalem, worlds away from the yacht owners and the discos, the busy beaches and the throngs of tourists.
Instead, what you will find is a retreat from the harsh realities of the everyday; a soothing respite for the soul. An elegant, peaceful, extraordinary environment worthy of the royalty which frequentlychooses to stay at Scott's.
There are only17 guestrooms, ranging from the most opulent of suites (understated, refined) to small singles with charm and the best possible furnishings. The beds at Scott's are world renowned; hand made, with goosedown pillows, wool blankets, and the best linens.
The hotel has two sun terraces and two breakfast rooms, a library, a writing room. A courtyard garden, a patio. The rooms are all ensuite and provide amenities such as robes, direct-dial phones, hair dryers. A television is located in the lounge for CNN junkies, and on demand, a guest can have one installed in the bedroom, but such requests are rare.
The "pièce de résistance" is perhaps the Roman Spa pool, an indoor, non-chlorinated pool with Jacuzzi® jets and an exercise swim jet.
As befits the royalty who are often guests, breakfast is served until noon. The terrace bar serves light fare in the evenings; there are several restaurants in the area for lunch and dinner.
A car rental is recommended, although the hotel is on the train line. There is ample (free) parking. The city of Palma is 25 minutes away; the beaches are 30 minutes or so from the hotel. George Scott, your host, can direct you to interesting activities away from the hotel if your adventurous side takes control.
Rates at Scott's are extraordinarily reasonable for the quality of the hotel, ranging from $165USD per night to $225USD for the suites.
Children under the age of 12 are discouraged; the hotel, being a restored historic building, is alas, also not handicap accessible.
One last caveat: George Scott is hard at work on his second mystery novel. The first, The Bloody Bokhara was just published (October, 1999). The second, The Chewed Caucasian, will be published in the spring of 2000. The novels are set in the hotel; look for the rugs described, and who knows... you might find yourself a character in one of his books.
