PARIS BY ARRONDISSEMENTS (DISTRICTS)
The arrondissements, or "districts" of Paris, grew from 12 to 20 in 1859 as the city spread and annexed more villages into its boundries. The 20 districts have remained the same since then, numbered from one to 20, with the First District being in the center and the others spiralling out in a clockwise pattern, spanning both banks of the Seine.
The arrondissements have evolved over the years to define the sense of the neighborhood, much the way New York's or London's neighborhoods are defined, and they are known too for which monuments or attractions they hold.
Choosing a hotel in Paris can be daunting if you don't know where you're staying or how close it is to where you want to be. Look through our explanations of the districts and the hotels that can be found in them. That should help. Just select an area and click.
